An unexpected transformation of a medical item into art, proving that physical health struggles do not diminish human value.
This artwork does something unexpected: it takes an everyday medical item—an incontinence pad—and turns it into a beautiful painting. The goal is to prove that physical health struggles or getting older do not change our value as human beings.
Here is what the various parts of the painting mean:
The Main Idea: By using a medical item usually hidden away in secret, the artist shows that a change in physical health does not lessen a person's inner strength.
The Shiny Surface: The crinkled metallic background and fine threads turn an everyday, disposable item into something that looks like precious jewellery.
The Corset Strings: The centre is laced up tightly like an old-fashioned corset. This represents how women have historically felt trapped by expectations of having a "perfect" body.
The Hanging Threads: Long threads hang down from the bottom of the canvas like a necklace. It suggests we can wear our vulnerabilities openly and with pride.
The Gold Leaf: Real gold leaf is used to cover the parts of the pad that are usually hidden, showing that the most private parts of our lives are precious and should be respected.
